Nationwide, nearly 20.8 million people have diabetes. Of those, approximately 6.2 million don’t know they have it. There are nearly 22,000 people in Luzerne and Wyoming Counties with diabetes, nearly 7,000 of whom are unaware of their condition. And the numbers are rising.
What’s worse, diabetes is a leading contributor to heart disease, stroke, kidney disease blindness, nervous system disease and many other serious – and potentially deadly – health complications.
That’s why Wyoming Valley Health Care System offers The Diabetes Management Center, the region’s most comprehensive resource for people with diabetes.
Just look at the many great resources the Center makes available to people with diabetes and their families:
- Self-management classes
- A variety of morning, afternoon and evening classes touch upon topics such as medication use, nutrition, monitoring, how to prevent complications, and much more. Physician prescription is required.
- Medical nutrition therapy
- A registered dietitian can help patients develop an individualized meal plan. Learn how to select and prepare healthy foods, and find out how food, exercise and medication affect your blood sugar so that you can live a more balanced life.
- Gestational diabetes management
- Our experts provide insight and information to expecting mothers facing the challenges of diabetes.
- Individual instruction
- Our expert staff helps people with diabetes understand and manage blood glucose and insulin, and teaches other self-care skills in the areas of meal-planning, physical activity, weight management and more.
- Support group
- Support groups have proven to be wonderful forums to share information, experiences and advice, as well as gain knowledge and understanding. Each diabetes support group session presents educational topics of interest, which is always followed by open discussion. The group is open to people of all ages.
Among the experienced and talented professionals are certified diabetes nurse educators and registered dietitians.
Nurse educators assess the individual needs of each patient, then provide the information, guidance and health advice to help the person with diabetes live more a fulfilling life.
Typically, nurse educators teach patients how to adapt their lifestyles to diabetes in order to better care for themselves. This may include instructing patients to monitor blood glucose levels, to administer insulin and to recognize and treat low or high blood sugar levels.
Registered dietitians assess the nutritional needs of each patient and develop a well-balanced meal plan, tailored to the person’s individual needs, tastes, activity level and lifestyle.
Meal times and types and amounts of food are planned and adjusted for each individual to promote better diabetes control. Our expert registered dietitians teach patients about nutrition and how to achieve better overall health, weight loss, lower fat intake, slow the development of kidney disease and control blood glucose levels.
