Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, the School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography is an 18-month program based at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital which prepares students both clinically and theoretically for careers in Diagnostic Medical Sonography – more commonly known as ultrasound.

A maximum of four students are accepted for the school term, which begins each September. Graduating students acquire a solid background in general sonography (abdominal, OB/GYN, high resolution scanning and introduction to non-invasive vascular sonography).

A graduation ceremony is held in March for students successfully completing the program. Certificates of Completion are granted, and graduates are eligible to take the National Certification exams.

• The applicant must be a high school graduate or equivalent with a minimum of two years post secondary education.
• The applicant may be a registered radiological technologist or graduate with a certificate from a formal allied health program.
• Consideration will be given if the applicant has a Bachelor of Science or Associates degree with patient care experience.
• The applicant must have a 3.0 GPA or higher.
• The applicant can also be enrolled for a minimum of two years (2) in a formal allied health program with the below prerequisites completed prior to completion of the application. The applicant must have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher during allied health education and transcripts from the education program must be submitted.
• For all applicants, prerequisite courses include Communications, Medical Terminology, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Physics and Algebra.
• The applicant must have had one (1) year of algebra either in high school or college.
• Documentation of eight (8) hours of observation in an ultrasound department.
  
• Three (3) letters of reference from the following categories must be submitted in sealed envelopes along with the application:
  - Radiologic or allied health program director
  - Current employer or immediate supervisor
  - Character reference from a non-family member

  A $10 non-refundable administrative fee must accompany the application.

Those applicants who meet the standards for acceptance will be contacted for a personal interview. Applicants who do not meet the criteria will be notified in writing. Admission to the school is open to any person whose academic record and personal merits attest to sucessful completion of the 18-month program. Under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, applicants to the School are selected without regard to sex, race, national orgin or creed.
